AKADEMIK SHOKALSKIY has become trapped in ice in the remote Antarctic
more than two days’ sailing from the nearest rescue vessel, the
Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) reports.
The research boat, which was on its way toward Mawson’s Hut at Cape Denison, Antarctica, is carrying 74 people.
The ship is almost 1,500 nautical miles (1,726 miles) south of Hobart, a city on the Australian island of Tasmania.
